The Problem
Malaysia is one of the top global plastic waste importers and ranks as one of the highest contributors to ocean-bound plastic waste.
Rapid urbanisation and population growth compound the already complex waste management issues, especially with plastic waste, posing severe threats to ecosystems and human well-being. This crisis extends its harmful grasp on Malaysia's diverse biodiversity, jeopardising both land and marine environments. Urgent and effective solutions are imperative to combat this pollution.
Approximately 80% of ocean plastics originate from rivers and coastlines, highlighting the crucial role of managing landfill waste along these waterways to protect marine ecosystems.
Our Solution
You probably have heard it more than a thousand times, but allow us to repeat it again.
We only have one earth. Just one. No substitute.
Our vision? Simple. We want to do our part in reducing solid waste in Malaysia's rivers and oceans by collecting one plastic at a time. There are no shortcuts in protecting our environment or communities. Reduce the usage of plastics, encourage a circular economy.
Through extensive cleanups and collections from local communities, we actively recover and repurpose recycled plastics, giving them a new lease on life. With each creation, we weave a profound story that highlights the transformative power of recycling and upcycling.
Upcycled believes in the power of partnerships and collaborations in creating a sustainable future. By actively involving local communities in our initiatives, we not only clean up and collect recyclable waste, but also empower them to be active participants in the fight against waste pollution. This also includes prioritising partnerships with marginalised communities, that are disproportionately affected by climate change, towards understanding their needs and working hand-in-hand toward sustainability goals. By building strong relationships and fostering mutual respect, we create a positive and lasting impact.
